Do you listen to Mozart and Beethoven or the Scorpions and
Rammstein? Is your grandmother from Germany? Do you wonder why people say Gesundheit when you sneeze? Do your parents drive a VW? Aren’t you glad you’re not in Kindergarten anymore? Do you prefer adidas over Nike? The German language and Germany are all
around you – maybe without you even noticing.
Step into German and explore with us all that Germany has to
offer. Here are some quick facts for starters:
With 82 million inhabitants Germany has the largest
population in Europe. But can you imagine that this Germany is smaller than the
state of Montana in the United States?
Berlin has been Germany’s capital since 1990 and almost 3.5
million Berliners make it Germany’s largest city.
Berlin’s best-known symbol is the Brandenburg Gate - which
you just entered with a click :-) And we hope that entering this gate will be
like entering a world that is completely new and at the same time very
familiar!
After World War II, Germany was split into two states with two separate
governments: East and West Germany. Berlin,
too, was divided into two halves by a massive concrete barrier called the Berlin
Wall. Thousands of people tried to climb this wall, many of them were killed.
Berlin did not become one city again until Germany was unified on
October 3, 1990. But even today, traces of the Berlin Wall can still be
seen. Pretty fascinating stuff, right? If you want to learn more, Step
